HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS AND POLITICAL EVOLUTION
NORBU RAMPHEL
The early history of Bhutan is enveloped in great obscurity, for unfortunately, owing to fire, earthquake, flood and internecine wars, it annals, which had been carefully recorded, were destroyed. The widespread destruction of the buildings by the earthquake of 1897 is responsible for the almost total destruction of the library of the present Tongsa Penlop, only a few MSS. from which we have gathered information, having escaped. This treatise of Historical Foundations and Political Evolution of Bhutan provides succinct and authoritative information, substantially derived from the writings/records of great scholars. Bhutan: Majestic Mountain Kingdom; Founding of Bhutan; History and Historiography: An Account; Advent of Buddhism; Golden Age: Glory of the Zhabdung Dynasty; Claude-White's Bhutan; An Excerpt from Pemberton; Debs and Desis: A Chronology; Bhutan and Neighbours: Historical Perspectives; Bhutan and Britain: Relations with British India; Geographical Explorations: Historical Excursions and Expeditions etc., are the main contents of the book. A reference work of great value, this will prove useful and informative to researchers, teachers and policy planners besides those who may be keen to know about the fascinating and beautiful mountainous kingdom of Bhutan. .

DISCOVERING BHUTAN EXCURSIONS AND EXPLORATIONS
NORBU RAMPHEL
The climatic conditions of Bhutan are akin to the Tundra and the natural vegetation is Alpine. The winters are exceedingly severe and summers very short and cold. The terrain of the land makes this mountainous state of Bhutan generally inaccessible both from north and also from the east and the west. A line of road communication exists from the Indian plains on the south. Air link is available but that too by helicopters/small planes and the selected places only. One of the characteristic features of Bhutan is its vast and impressive forests. They remain by far the greatest wealth of the country. Discovering Bhutan: Excursions and Explorations, as is obvious from the title, categorically narrates glory and splendour of this enchanting land. Substantially based on authoritative sources, this puts light on the following: Introduction: Contours of a Kingdom: British Missions to Bhutan: George Bogle's Bhutan Chronicles; Bhutan: Talks and Parleys: Travels in Eastern Bhutan: Places, Peoples and Living; Conquest of Chomodhari - I and II; Audience with Deb-Rajah; Health Research Mission: Modern Bhutan; Journal of the Mission to Bhutan in 1837-38 etc.

BHUTAN EMERGENCE OF A NATION STATE
NORBU RAMPHEL
Geopolitically, the location of Bhutan between Tibetan plateau and the Assam-Bengal plains of India gives the kingdom considerable strategic importance. The kingdom has potentially adequate economic base, but its resources are underdeveloped and it remains the poorest among Himalayan kingdoms. Since 1907 Bhutan has been ruled autocratically, but the feudalistic system of government is changing slowly, and the country seems to be evolving peacefully into a new democratic nation under India's guidance and protection. Bhutan: Emergence of a Nation-State provides thought-provoking articles on Bhutan: An Introductory Overview; Kingdom, Kings and Kingship; Evolution of Literature in Bhutan; Geographical Evolution and Consolidation: An Excerpt from Pemberton; Modern Era: Triumph of Bhutanese Tradition; Administrative Evolution: A Historical Perspective; Kingship and Governance in Modern Bhutan; Determinants of Sovereignty and State Affairs: Cultural Dimensions and Achievements; Bhutan and the Comity of Nations; Economic Planning and Potentials etc.

VIVEKANANDA, AUROBINDO AND GANDHI ON EDUCATION
DR. SUSMIT PRASAD PANI DR. SAMAR KUMAR PATTNAIK
India has witnessed a sociocultrual resurgence in 19th and 20th century. Socio-religious reformers, nationalists, litterateur and others had enriched this resurgence. Vivekananda, Aurobindo and Mahatma Gandhi were front runners amongst them. The present work attempts to study their educational thought in a historical perspective and to enrich our present understanding of the crisis in education. The contemporary India thinks that India should evolve a system of education, which retains the essential cultural fabric of eternal India, and yet equip Indians to take their rightful place in the world of science and technology. Indians are concerned with character building, retaining moral standards and focus on spiritual goals. All this necessitates a study of great educational ideals. The work is a step in this direction. The background material offered in the book includes growth of education under British rule and an introduction on the imperialist point of view. The background also traces growth of nationalist educational thought before Vivekananda. The main work is spread over three chapters on Vivekananda, Aurobindo and Gandhi. A near common format has been adopted. The introductory component on each tries to provide a brief life-sketch and mental makeup to facilitate a better understanding. This is followed with an analysis of their general philosophical outlooks as education for all them were a part of their general philosophical outlook. The third component is devoted to their educational theory and practices. A brief conclusion on each has also been provided. Besides analyzing the contribution of each, attempts have been made to compare their thinking, trace the synthetic growth of educational ideology and examine the contemporary relevance of their thinking.
