DEMOGRAPHY AND HEALTH PROFILE OF THE TRIBALS
DIPAK KUMAR ADAK, BISWANATH BHATTACHARYA, ROHINI GHOSH MANORANJAN PAL, PREMANAND BHARATI T.S. VASULU
Tribals comprise an appreciable component of the autochthonous population in India, constituting about one-tenth of the total population: the country is not, of course, homogenous in regard to the proportion or the composition of the tribal population. In 1991, about one-fifth of the people in the (new) State of Madhya Pradesh were tribals, numbering 10 million, larger than in any other State in India. This admirably produced collection of studies, entitled "Demography and Health Profile of the Tribal of Madhya Pradesh", edited by Dipak K. Adak, Biswanath Bhattacharya, Rohini Ghosh, Manoranjan Pal, Premananda Bhrarati, and T.S. Vasulu at the Anthropological Survey of India and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, attempts to answer some of the questions. The studies are based on large-scale survey data, relating to tribals in the region, and also case study and focus group types of data in some specific parts of the region.

This collected work is divided into two parts:
1. This different features of the tribes in this region as such mainly based on large scale sample surveys or based on data which are already available from well known large scale sample surveys such as NFHS and

2. The different features of tribes in some specific parts of this region, which are mainly based on case studies.

GENDER DISPARITY MANIFESTATIONS, CAUSES AND IMPLICATIONS
DR. PREMANANDA BHARATI, DR. MANORANJAN PAL
Gender Disparity: Manifestations, Causes and Implications is aimed, as it is evident from the title, at studying different dimensions of gender bias, their causes and implications. The issue of gender differences has recently drawn the attention of the world because of the World Bank, the IMF, the ADB and other international development organizations have given much importance to this issue realizing that the uniform development of any country or region is not possible (i) as long as hardship of women, compared to the men, in the society persists; and (ii) without giving equal power to women. If we want to reduce exploitation of women in the world then it is necessary to know the extent and the form of such exploitation. The form and extent may be different for different countries.

The volume includes papers on different dimensions on Gender Gap and also the analysis is not restricted to a specific region. As already mentioned, there are quite few papers on casual analysis. This volume also contains discussions on existing measures of gender inequality and proposes some new measures. Most of the contributors and well known and established thinkers in this area. They were drawn from various corners of the globe.

POPULATION GROWTH AND THE PROBLEM OF UNEMPOYMENT
S.P. GUPTA
Population is the vital component in the process of Socio-Economic development in a country. The level of welfare and the improvement in the quality of life of people are related to the management of population by a Government. If population is allowed to take its natural course in an underdeveloped country like India, it is apt to weaken the very fabric of economic system.

This treatise seeks to highlight the trend of population growth, the efforts made by the Government in the form of family Welfare Programme and the trend of unemployment existing in the country. Efforts have also been made to project a level of unemployment by 1991, unless the strategy adopted by the government to check population growth is transformed completely.

Suggestions have also been made to enforce changes in the Government' policy so that the incidence of unemployment could be reduced in the larger interest of the country.
